Grand Prize Winner Saxophonist Thomas Nguyen, 20, is currently a sophomore at the University of Central Arkansas where he is pursuing a degree in Music Performance under Dr. Jackie Lamar. His previous teachers include Zach Edwards, Prissy Buchanan, and Dr. Christopher Barrick. In the summer of 2016, Thomas was selected to participate in the Boston University Tanglewood Institute where he participated in masterclasses, lessons, and studied chamber music. He has also performed in masterclasses with renowned performers such as Joseph Lulloff, the Viridian Quartet, Kenneth Radnofsky, and others. As a member of the UCA saxophone choir, he has performed at the 2017 North American Saxophone Alliance Region IV Conference. He is also a member of the UCA Wind Ensemble which has performed in renowned venues such as the Meyerson Center and Carnegie Hall.

Grand Prize Winner Tracy Wong, 22, received her BA/BM in psychology and piano performance as a double-degree student at Oberlin College and Conservatory, studying under Angela Cheng. She began playing the piano at the age of four and made her orchestral debut with the Saint Petersburg State Symphony in Russia when she was eleven years old. Since then, she has gone on to perform with various orchestras throughout the United States by invitation and as the result of winning national and international competitions, such as the Chicago Steinway Concerto Competition, the Louisville Young Artist Concerto Competition, and the Camerata International Artists Competition. As a soloist, she has also performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As of fall 2018, Tracy will be attending Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, pursuing her MM degree.

Tracy has had the privilege of playing for musical masters such as Alvin Chow, Sergei Babayan, Tamas Ungar, and Ronan O’Hora in masterclasses. She has also performed in multiple music festivals such as the Banff Centre’s Summer Piano Masterclass and the Gijón International Piano Festival. In addition to solo performance, Tracy enjoys collaborative piano and has participated in many chamber music groups, specializing in her work with woodwind ensembles.

Tracy firmly believes that a musician should strive to be as well-rounded as possible. Following this conviction, she has since made an effort to combine performance and the fields of education, psychology, and outreach in her work with various organizations such as the San Francisco Opera’s Education Department, Credo’s Make Music Cleveland start-up non-profit, and the NPR’s radio show “From the Top.” In addition, she enjoys musical research, especially across cultural lines, as exemplified by her coding work for “The Natural History of Song,” an ongoing Harvard University graduate project. Most recently, Tracy was the Site Chair of the regional and semifinal rounds of the 2018 Cincinnati Arts Association’s Overture Awards, a tri-state high school arts scholarship competition.
